Members of the First-year Library Advisory Board are important liaisons between fellow students in their residence halls, classes and social networks and Duke Libraries. This is a prime opportunity to represent the student body to what many academics call the heart of the university-- since the library, physical as well as virtual, is the starting point of research as well as the repository of its results. In addition, academic libraries in the United States and across the globe are undergoing radical changes in their roles and responsibilities to the public, moving from antiquated storage facilities to partners in information collection, searching, and preservation. You can become another important partner to Duke Libraries.
In the First-year Library Advisory Board, we are looking specifically for the ideas and opinions of first-year students. Your commentary and involvement would encompass all aspects of Duke Libraries, not just those specific to the first-year experience or the East Campus Libraries.
Mission statement of the First Year Library Advisory Board
The first year library advisory board is a coalition of first year students and library coordinators whose mission includes three responsibilities:
Over the next several years, the board will be particularly important to three new programs: the personal librarian program, starting fall semester, 2011; the Music Library renovation (2011) and the Lilly Library renovation (2012).
When does it meet?
The First Year Library Advisory Board meets weekly in the evening for the first 9 weeks of the fall and spring semesters. After the 9th week, the Board takes a hiatus, to give members extra time during the busiest part of the semester.
