Acquisitions Department Duke University Libraries

 

Mission Statement

The Acquisitions Department has the primary responsibility to acquire library materials needed to support the educational and research mission of  Duke University.  Working with 32 subject specialist, Acquisitions:

  • Facilitates the selection and acquisitions of material for Duke Faculty and students.
  • Orders library material in any format from around the world.
  • Administers the Libraries materials budget.
  • Sets up trials for electronic resources
  • Negotiates all licenses for electronic resources.
  • Catalogs received materials in non-roman languages.

Acquisitions adheres to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP); we maintain the highest ethical standards in our business transactions. The Department consists of 16 professional and career bi-weekly staff and is part of the Information Services Division.

Vision

Acquisitions seeks opportunities to further our efforts for an efficient workflow while maintaining good customer service with all partners in the publishing, vendor, and agent community; striving to work collaboratively for the benefit of the researcher needs on campus within TRLN.  We continue to review, analyze and assess vendor performance and sources of supply facilitating cooperative purchasing to meet the mission of the University.  We participate in several consortia opportunities to provide electronic resources for the TRLN community.

 New Initiatives for 2010/2011

  •  Purchasing and preparing 25 Kindles and 15 Nooks for use by Duke  Students, Faculty and Staff.
  •  Participating is the Ebrary ARL Patron driven Acquisitions pilot and ongoing  purchases.
  •  Initiating OCLC's World Cat Selection for Otto Harrassowitz.
  •  Review of workflow's and throughput within the Department.
  •  Participating in the Implementation of Serials Solutions for Electronic Resources.
