Cataloging & Metadata Services

Mission

Cataloging & Metadata Services supports the teaching, learning, and research needs of the Duke University community by cataloging and providing intellectual access to Duke University Libraries' print, electronic, and digital collections.  The department creates and maintains accurate records in the library's catalog and OCLC to facilitate discovery and promote resource sharing.

Vision

We strive to develop and apply creative solutions to manage and facilitate the use of information resources.  We continually build expertise in metadata standards, as well as knowledge of the resources and their scholarly context.  We use this expertise to define, create, and manage metadata to serve multiple purposes.

Goals

  • Participate in OLE development.
  • Expand and mainstream metadata services.
  • Roadmap evolving electronic workflow - build eBook workflow around use of Serials Solutions.
  • Use assessment to determine feasibility of discontinuing review of materials returned from commercial bindery.
  • Expand communication and outreach activities.
