As Associate University Librarian for Collections and User Services since 2009, Robert (Bob) Byrd oversees the Libraries’ operations in the following areas: access and delivery services; assessment and user experience; collection strategy and development; conservation; digital scholarship services; international and area studies; research and instructional services; and technical services. He serves as a member of the Libraries’ executive group and at various times has provided leadership related to library expansions and renovations, the assessment of educational and administrative support units at Duke, and the development of library and academic services for Duke Kunshan University. Previous positions at Duke have included Curator of Manuscripts, 1985-1989; Director of Special Collections, 1989-1992; Associate University Librarian and Director of the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library (now the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library), 1992-2010; and Associate University Librarian for Collections, 2006-2009. He received the M.S. in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978; the M.A. and M.Phil. in History (Major fields: U.S. South, American Colonial History) from Yale University in 1973 and 1975; and the A.B. in History from Duke University in 1972.
