Hi, I am a new employee of Duke University. I tried to login to my library account using my NetID (xxxx) but the system would not let me login. Could you check what is wrong? Thanks.

Your question has been forwarded to the Circulation Dept. They should get back to you.

Hi, does the theme music to the game tetris have a name?

There are many versions of Tetris for different platforms, with variations in the theme music. Wikipedia has a nice overview . The most popular theme is called “Music A” and seems to be based on a Russian folk tune, “Korobeiniki.”

Honorary degrees March 26, 2008

What are the generally accepted, legitimate fields in which honorary doctorates are awarded by academic institutions?

I know of no generally accepted rules for this. Each institution will make it’s own rules, but aren’t these inherently illegitimate? I mean, they’re specifically for people who aren’t following the degree requirements and can be tailored to the individual receiving the award. I’m sure that some universities are more rigorous about granting honorary doctorates (e.g., they want the person to have performed feats of academic rigor, or to have contributed greatly to society), while others grant the honor to large donors.

Odd structures March 24, 2008

I’m studying abroad and I have seen a few of these odd structures in London. They are circular in base, bigger than the Duke library, and about 6 stories tall, though they vary. They are made only of steel supports, but do not seem to be involved in any construction. They don’t hold anything up either. What are they there for? Do people in London just like to remember using erector sets as children? Cheers.

Do they look old? These sound like tanks for the storage of gas. In particular, I think they’re associated with the storage of coal gas (derived from coal). There was steel scaffolding around the cylindrical tank. It could be that the tank part in the middle has been removed, leaving only the scaffolding. Some of the really old ones used a brick curtain around the outside rather than steel scaffolding. You can google words like “gas storage tanks” and “industrial archaeology” and look for images.

Grape Nuts March 18, 2008

what country were grape nuts made in?

They’re still made by Post Cereals, now a division of Kraft Foods, which is a US company, so they’re made in the US unless it says otherwise on the box.   Some cereals sold in this country are made in Canada, which would be indicated on the box.

Personalized login screen March 14, 2008

Dear Sir,
How can i make my log-in screen personalized? my laptop is Acer aspire4720? co’z i want my personal pics on login screen.thank you very much.

I would simply go to google.com and search for words such as “personalize login screen.” There seem to be websites and bulletin boards where this is discussed. I would focus on the particular operating system you’re using (Windows XP Home Edition; Vista; etc.) rather than the particular brand of computer.

Sports personalities March 6, 2008

Dear Answer Person,Do you think that Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and other superstar basketball players (I’ll let you be the judge of who’s a superstar and who’s not) feel like they’re living fulfilled lives? In addition, do you think NBA bench players feel they’re living fulfilled lives? Thanks!

Studies have shown that there is remarkably little correlation between income or wealth and fulfillment. But there’s got to be some! Even the bench players are making good money (compared to librarians), so they sure better feel fulfilled. The superstars have pretty big egos, and those sorts of people are usually fulfilled whether they should be or not.

Perkins renovations March 3, 2008

I’m curious. After the Perkins renovations, what will it look like? Are there pictures or plans we could peruse?

The style will be pretty much what you see in Bostock and in Perkins 1st floor and Lower Floor 2. There are some web pages on the renovation project that haven’t been updated in a long time, and similar information was on a kiosk in the entry hall of Perkins, but these don’t include interior views or floor plans besides a few artist’s sketches of interiors. The specific floor plans aren’t publicly available, but there will be a mixture of book storage, open study areas, group study rooms, individual study carrels, classrooms (in the Perkins Lower Floor 1), and staff offices.
