Tom Moore (Music Library) will participate in the 2009 Conference of the
THE CONSORTIUM IN LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN STUDIES
at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University .
as part of the panel on “Landscape and Identity in Latin America, Brazil”,
February 14, 9:30 – 11:00 am in Room 1005 of the Fedex Global Education Center, Chapel Hill.
He will speak on How to be a Carioca.
Content: Social groups define their identities through how members present themselves to each other, embodying common models (and more importantly anti-models) about what is possible for members in the group in terms of dress, behavior, speech, with these models expressing shared values in the area of work, play, family, community. I will look at “how to be a carioca” – what the residents of Rio de Janeiro expect of each other in expressing their commonalities as stakeholders in the “Cidade Maravilhosa.” Respondent: a “Carioca da gema,” Deborah Camara Freire.
