19th-century piano music in Rio de Janeiro February 11, 2009

Since the last time I looked, the folks at the National Library have put 875 digitized scores on line, and they are delivered as high-quality JPEG images (hooray!) which can be downloaded, or as DJVU files (anyone using this file-type yet?)

The search/delivery software for their digital library doesn’t seem to be quiteworking yet, since a search for scores (”partituras”) tells you that there are 875, but the command to retrieve the result set will only pull 400 (100 at a time). That first 400 seems to have a wide majority of polkas for piano by Brazilian composers from the later 19th century, with some quadrilles as well.

The BN also has a very strong collection of European music from this period, but nothing seems to have been digitized in that area as yet.

How to get there:

go to http://www.bn.br/bndigital/pesquisa.htm

and choose “tipo de publicacao” – the second page of results includes

the keyword “partitura”. Click.
