Middle Schoolers learn about the Holocaust October 26, 2009
Posted by Dottie Black in : Uncategorized , add a commentMs. Moser’s 6th graders spent six weeks learning about the Holocaust. They read books, watched movies, did writing assignments. At the end they took all that they had learned and felt and wrote poetry. Once the poems were written they created multimedia projects that added even more depth and feeling.

Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines October 8, 2009
Posted by Dottie Black in : Uncategorized , add a commentCopyright law is confusing and confounding. Trying to explain to 6th graders why they can’t use a popular song to play during their slide show is difficult. I had to do some research on copyright and fair use and I came across several very good resources to help you understand this very complex issue. It may seem daunting but our students need to know and understand the ethics involved in copyright and plagerism.

Solar System Wiki is out of this World! April 13, 2009
Posted by Dottie Black in : Blogging, Events, GPS, Lakewood Elementary School, Uncategorized , comments closedI have had several teachers use wiki’s as a collaborative tool over the past three years. This year one of my PepsiCo mentees used a wiki to collaborate between classes. They did a great job and the extra competition really motivated the students to do their best work.
Take a look at Ms. Chesnut’s students’ wiki about the Solar System
Save the Lakewood Y did just that! May 5, 2008
Posted by Dottie Black in : Lakewood Elementary School, Projects, Uncategorized , add a commentBack in September, I met with one of my new teachers,Libby Montagne from Lakewood Elementary. She told me she was working with a group of her students to help save the Lakewood YMCA. The YMCA board was trying to sell the building and Durham would lose a fantastic community resource. I suggested that her students use a WIKI to document what they were doing.
Last week it was announced that the building will be shared by a new Durham Public Schools Montessori middle school and the YMCA. A win-win-win situation for the YMCA,Durham Public Schools and the Lakewood community.
Congratulations to Ms. Montagne and her students for helping be a part of the process.
