- Abstract:
-
U.S. Metropolitan Statistical Areas represents geographic entities, defined by the United States Office of Management and Budget for use by Federal statistical agencies, based on the concept of a core area with a large population nucleus, plus adjacent communities having a high degree of economic and social integration with that core. Qualification of an Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) requires the presence of a city with 50,000 or more inhabitants, or the presence of an urbanized area and a total population of at least 100,000 (75,000 in New England). The county or counties containing the largest city and surrounding densely settled territory are central counties of the MSA. Additional outlying counties qualify to be included in the MSA by meeting certain other criteria of metropolitan character, such as a specified minimum population density or percentage of the population that is urban. MSAs in New England are defined in terms of cities and towns, following rules concerning commuting and population density. MSAs were first defined and effective June 30, 1983.

After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials. When political boundaries extend into water, the coded boundary line follows the shoreline, creating a visible landmark. Any extensions of political boundaries into water areas are not represented.

The geospatial part of this data set was extracted from the 2000 Census Version TIGER/Line® files (CD–ROM edition) then generalized to 1,000 points per polygon and 4,000 points per feature. Generalization was applied only to those polygons requiring it, so the polygons not generalized have the same positional accuracy as the TIGER/Line coordinates and the generalized polygons have less positional accuracy.
The positional accuracy of the TIGER/Line coordinates varies with the source materials used but at best meets the established National Map Accuracy standards (+/- 167 feet approximately) where 1:100,000-scale maps from the USGS are the source. The Census Bureau cannot specify the accuracy of feature updates added by its field staff or of features derived from the GBF/DIME-Files or other map sources. Thus, the level of positional accuracy in the TIGER/Line files is not suitable for high-precision measurement applications such as engineering problems, property transfers, or other uses that might require highly accurate measurements of the earth's surface.
