Abstract:
U.S. ZIP Code Areas represents five-digit ZIP Code areas used by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver mail more effectively. The first digit of a five-digit ZIP Code divides the country into 10 large groups of states numbered from 0 in the Northeast to 9 in the far West. Within these areas, each state is divided into an average of 10 smaller geographical areas, identified by the second and third digits. These digits, in conjunction with the first digit, represent a sectional center facility or a mail processing facility area. The fourth and fifth digits identify a post office, station, branch or local delivery area.
Purpose:
U.S. ZIP Code Areas provides area, post office name, and population for each ZIP Code area in the United States.

The following steps were performed by ESRI: Extracted the data set from TANA/GDT Dynamap/ZIP Code Boundary & Inventory Files v. 13.0. Deleted null (water) features. Created regions (multi-part) based on the ZIP attribute. Added the SQMI attribute and calculated its values. Added POP2004 attribute from ESRI Business Information Solutions data. Added attribute POP04_SQMI and calculated its values. Added and calculated SUMBLKPOP attribute by summing Census Block centroids defined by the Census Bureau from the Public Law 94-171 population files that fall within each ZIP Code area. Reformatted the attributes. In cases where the ZIP Code area falls in two states, insured that the STATE attribute's value reflects the state with the greatest area. Created ArcGIS® layer file (.lyr), projection file (.prj), and spatial indices.
