Description:

Abstract:

This file contains harvesting data from Duke Forest for the years 1931 - 1943. Data was mostly taken from digitized paper maps, but may also include some taken from records and ledger books.

Purpose:

The management files were created in order to preserve historical data and to provide a practical vehicle for distributing this data to staff and researchers.
The harvesting file includes all commercial cutting operations, both intermediate (thinning, selection cuts, etc.) and final harvests (clearcuts, seed tree harvests, etc.). Inermediate cuts do not create a new stand, while final harvests do, either through natural regeneration or plantation.

Attribute information was mostly taken from the corresponding paper maps. In some situations, however, more accurate attribute information was found in paper records (old files, ledger books, etc.) and this information was used. Some attributes could not be determined from either the paper maps or any other files, and as such, are left blank.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

Polygons were traced from scanned and rectified paper maps; as such, any errors present in the paper maps were retained, if not magnified. These polygons, therefore, are only relative locations of management activities.

Completeness_Report:

Polygons that appeared to be incorrect were checked against paper records (old files, ledger books, etc.) and, if possible, GPS data or personal knowledge of an area. In cases in which the latter files were available, they were assumed to be more accurate than the paper maps.
