Abstract:

South America is part of Region 6 (Central and South America) for the World Energy Assessment. A fundamental task in the assessment is to map the locations and type of production for existing oil and gas fields. The Petroconsultants database is the only one available that has coverage for the continent of South America. Oil and gas field symbols represent field center-points and are published with permission from Petroconsultants International Data Corporation, 1996 database.

Purpose:

The purpose of this map is to depict the general location of the oil and gas fields in South America as presented in the Petroconsultants (1996) database. The locations of the oil and gas fields were used in the digital allocations of oil and gas field data to the geologic provinces prior to the assessment.

The accuracy of the oil and gas field data, including the locations of the fields, is wholly dependent upon the accuracy of the data in the 1996 version of the Petroconsultants International database. For the assessment of South America, the assumption was made that the data were accurate at a scale of 1:5000000.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

To the extent that oil and gas fields are reported in the literature, the locations of the Petroconsultants oil and gas fields were checked against maps available in the literature, and the comparison was generally excellent.

Completeness_Report:

The Petroconsultants database contains information on most of the oil and gas fields in South America. Not all oil and gas fields are present in the database, especially smaller oil and gas fields, and we did not attempt to update the information prior to the use of the data.
