DescriptionOpen letter from Governor Joshua L. Martin to men of Alabama, encouraging them to enlist in volunteer army to fight in the Mexican-American War. Notes that Alabama has sent fewer men than other states, and that "the lethargy displayed, must leave an indellible [sic] blot upon our escutcheon, if we are not aroused to action." Dated Tuscaloosa, Oct. 14, 1847. On back, communication from War Department to Governor Martin directing him to organize a volunteer army from the state.
