DescriptionCircular letter from H. W. Thompson, Chaplain of the Department of Michigan Grand Army of the Republic, announcing the observance of May 30th as Memorial Day. He calls on the Department of Michigan, members of the Woman's Relief Corps, and the Camps of the Sons of Veterans to assemble and participate in "the beautiful services provided by the Grand Army." The chaplain recommends inviting children to the services, where they may learn "the principles of loyalty and patriotism," and may "take up the loving task...of scattering flowers over the graves of our Nation's patriots, and commemorating their lives and deeds."
