DescriptionProclamation by governor William Holden that Alamance County, North Carolina, is "in a state of insurrection." Describes assaults and hangings by armed bands, including of a schoolteacher; forced flight of county postmaster, and various crimes and general lawlessness. "Every citizen, of whatever party or color, must be absolutely free to express his political opinions, and must be safe in his own house. These outrages and these violations of law must and SHALL cease." Events known as Kirk-Holden War.
