DescriptionNews extra "Special to the [Wilmington?] Messenger about the explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor. Secretary of the Navy, John D. Long was directed by President McKinley to send condolences to Captain Sigsbee, on behalf of the officers and crew. "A cablegram from General Blanco to the Spanish legation states that the explosion was an accident" but U.S. Naval officers doubt the explosion was accidental; "the London papers hint at treachery", and "...all realize the full import of the occurrence should it transpire that the loss of the battleship was due to Spanish or Cuban treachery."
