DukEngineer

The DukEngineer Digital Collection features nearly all DukEngineer magazines issued from 1940-2013, by the students at Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering. This collection was compiled from the holdings of Duke University Libraries, Duke University Archives and Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering. This collection was digitized to correspond with Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering 75th anniversary in 2014-2015. In addition to the DukEngineer Digital Collection, the Pratt School of Engineering also has digital versions from 2002 through the present in the DukEngineer Magazine Archive.

DukEngineer, a student run publication, was first issued in May 1940 under the title “College of Engineering” as the publication of the Engineering Council. The title was changed in December of that inaugural year to The Duke Engineer. In October 1942, the title was changed a final time to DukEngineer and is still published yearly by engineering students. The original mimeographed issues were free and started with the goal to be “published periodically” by the Engineer’s Club. The DukEngineer evolved to a printed magazine (complete with advertisements) in 1943 that was published six times a year for a $1.00 subscription. From 1946-1976 (with a few exceptions), the magazine was published four times a year with the subscription rate eventually rising to $1.50. After a hiatus in 1977, DukEngineer was redesigned as semi-annual magazine in 1978 that included the alumni newsletter and was available at no cost to all Pratt students, faculty and alum every Spring and Fall semester. In 2002, DukEngineer became the yearly publication that it is today. As stated in the inaugural issue dedication in May of 1940, DukEngineer has remained, “strictly a student venture” that covers the activities of engineering clubs, societies and departments at Duke. The publication also includes articles about advancements in engineering at Duke and worldwide, in addition to alumni and faculty profiles. The inclusion of a final page of jokes, puzzles or cartoons has also remained a tradition throughout the run of DukEngineer.
