His father is a teacher and sides with his son but his mother is in control and with a few tears has the situation in hand. he is the eldest son, about 19, and it is considered bad to leave your teens and not get married. 3 sisters and one brother. English major wants to do his Ph.D. on Thomas Hardy. Innocent, frustrated, he wants to leave India. He will become trapped like the rest.

Of course the main question is why if he is a bright, intelligent boy he does not rebel, why does he accept so readily?
