"I have been astonished to observe through the medium of the newspapers that a widespread impression prevails to the effect that we are antagonistic to horse railroads. This is not correct. We believe the horse railroads are our friends, but even if they are our enemies, why we love our enemies."

"It is not fair to represent the Atlantic avenue Railroad company (horsecars) as opposed to rapid transit in Brooklyn. I am in favor of rapid transit for this city, especially on Myrtle avenue. [Great laughter, cries of O, O,] When I think of the Union Elevated Railroad I am reminded of the good Western preacher who preached upon the world, the flesh and the devil. When he had finished expatiating

on the temptations of the world he turned his attention to denouncing the insidious allurements of the flesh, and when he had exhausted that subject he said "And now brethren, I come to the devil" [Laughter] Just so with me - and now I come to the Union Elevated Railroad. "We have had within six months, acts passed for water and gas, and last Monday for flagging sidewalks, and all for a street that will not be completed for many months yet, and the paving and perhaps grading has all to be done over again. And why such rapid legislation for a street whose inhabitants live about a musket shot distant from each other, and who of them have been consulted about flagging sidewalks?
