the suspect in the confusion moves behind one of the cops and tries to grab his gun. The cop wirls around the two grapple. The other cop [illegible] comes around behind the suspect who has fallen on his side and starts to kick him (with heavy thuds) in the back as the first cop keeps punching the guy in the face they get the cuffs on him. He lies face down on the concrete shouting obscenities. The cops lift him up and drag him to the police car, open the rear door and throw him in face first on the floor. One of the cops slams the door in anger as the other cop examines his bruised fist. As they get in one man comes over to the cop driving and starts arguing, obscenities fly. The cops drive off with their human cargo. The group mans the door like bees at the entrance to hive, shouting obscenities into the night. They go back inside the street is silent again. The violence really only lasted about 45 seconds the whole scene [illegible] two minutes.. The cops were always

in command of the situation. They reacted brutely and with anger when attacked.
Someone walking by that corner 5 minutes later would be unaware that an act of violence just been committed on that spot. Not that the tension from such an incident is dispelled expelled. It remains with the participants and it is reflected in future actions.
It the city these days there is no prelude to violence. It can happen like, the kid on Myrtle Ave. two years ago, who when some blacks came up to him and asked him for a match, answered No and they stabbed him dead in the heart. It can happen as quickly as a "no".
The point is that the essential trust needed to transact ordinary everyday business in the streets has been undermined. You can no longer be sure that the person walking behind you is not going to stab you in the back. You have to be aware of who is in back of you.
