Subjects include photographs of cross country road trips; rural New York; Manhattan; Brooklyn; rural Kentucky; Hippies in San Francisco; composers; gay rallies and demonstrations; St. Joseph's School for the Deaf; India; England; Ireland; France; and, a large number of nocturnal pictures.

Among William Gedney earliest subjects were his maternal grandparents and their dairy farm in Norton Hill, New York. Most of these photographs, which he collected under the title, "The Farm," were made between 1957 and 1959. In early writings, Gedney describes childhood memories of time spent with his grandparents and his attraction to their rural way of life.
