Newspaper Readership Project files; and a dissertation draft. The 2006 and 2007
additions (2006-0087 and 2007-0026) primarily consist of files related to
Bogart's research in and writings about newspaper advertising. Included are
typescripts, correspondence, clippings, photocopies of articles, slides, and
periodicals, as well as 28 VHS tapes and 37 3.5" diskettes. Acquired as part of
the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing
History.

Biographical Note
Bogart was a sociologist, author and marketing specialist known for
studying the role of mass media in culture. Born in Poland, Bogart emigrated to
the U.S. at age two with his parents. He attended Brooklyn College as an
undergraduate, served in the Army Signal Intelligence Corps during WWII, and
earned a doctorate in sociology from the University of Chicago. He taught
marketing at New York University, Columbia University and the Illinois
Institute of Technology. He also served as the executive vice president and
general manager of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau. At the time of his death,
Bogart was a director and senior consultant for Innovation, an international
media consulting firm and wrote a column for Presstime, the magazine of the
Newspaper Association of America. He died October 15, 2005 at the age of
84.

Collection Overview
Accession (2005-0080) comprises correspondence; speeches; book
reviews; articles; subject, association, and Newspaper Readership Project
files; and a dissertation draft. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center
for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.
The 2006 addition (2006-0087)(1,800 items, 2.4 linear feet; dated
1961-2006) contains files related to Bogart's various books, articles,
dissertation, speeches and special projects. These files came from his home
office in Manhattan. Also includes a few copies of some of his books, which
have been removed and cataloged separately, and 31 3.5" diskettes, which have
been removed, and their contents have been migrated to the server.
The 2007 addition (2007-0026)(23,200 items, 31.6 lin. ft.; dated
1935-2006) primarily consists of files related to Bogart's research in and
writings about newspaper advertising, including typescripts, correspondence,
clippings, photocopies of articles, slides, and periodicals, as well as 28 VHS
tapes and 6 3.5" diskettes.
