Collection Overview
The John Hope Franklin Papers span the years 1889-1998, and document Franklin's professional career as a historian, as well as his personal life and political activities, focusing especially on his activities since 1970.
Formats in the collection include correspondence, research material assembled by Franklin, writings by and about Franklin,
manuscripts, material relating to family history, printed material, notebooks, information and multimedia packets,
clippings, photographs, video and audiocassettes, as well as a few artifacts. The earliest materials in the collection relate to Franklin's writings and research, particularly regarding the 19th-century army officer, minister, and historian George Washington Williams. The collection is organized into the following series: Audiovisual Materials, the
Advisory Board for the President's Initiative on Race(ABPIR), Correspondence, Engagements and Activities, Honors and Awards, Personal and Family, Photographs, Subject Files, and Writings. Collection acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Collection of African and African American Documentation.
The Advisory Board for the President's Initiative
on Race (ABPIR) Series primarily comprises items Franklin gathered for
his work on U.S. President Bill Clinton's race initiative,
One America in the 21st Century, from 1997 to
1998. There is little information regarding the deliberations of the Advisory
Board, and no final report included in the files, although it is available in the Duke Libraries holdings. Pre-1997 material generally comprises clippings
regarding Franklin's activities and publications, and artifacts. The ABPIR series is
arranged into the following subseries:
Meeting Notebooks,
Writings for Board Consideration, Publicity, Artifacts, Oversize Materials, and
Audiovisual
Materials (removed to the Audiovisual Series for preservation purposes).
The many videos and sound recordings in the
Audiovisual Series were created by or assembled by John Hope Franklin, and are a rich source of information about John Hope Franklin's life and career, and about race relations in the United States. Arranged into subseries by format and further into recordings of others and recordings of Franklin. Originals in the Audiovisual Materials Series are closed to
use. However, use copies are available. Otherwise, Technical Services
staff need to produce use copies before contents can be accessed. Please
contact Research Services staff before coming to use this series.
The smaller
Correspondence Series contains routine
professional and personal correspondence, largely incoming, although several of
Franklin's handwritten draft responses can be found. There are also a few
pieces of family correspondence. Other correspondence can be found in the Writings Series, particularly in the Writings by Others Subseries, in the Engagements and Activities Series, and in the Personal and Family Series.
The
Personal and Family Series contains items dating back to 1891 relating to John Hope Franklin's family members, friends, and mentors. Early items include an autobiography and a diary (1911-1920) written by his father, Buck C. Franklin, and a pension application for his grandfather. Other documents relate to Franklin's wife, Aurelia Whittington Franklin, and various mentors and friends.
There are images of Franklin taken throughout his life in the
Photographs Series, including reproductions of portraits dating from his childhood until his appointment to President Clinton's
Advisory Board on Race in 1997. Divided into the following subseries by
content:
Honors and Appointments and
Personal. For better preservation, items are physically arranged and
described according to size; thus, photographs from each subseries are found in
multiple boxes.
Materials in the
Subjects Files Series cover an array of topics of interest to Franklin, especially race, racism, and affirmative action. The Durham, N.C. area is represented by a North Carolina College yearbook for 1946 and folders on area organizations. Formats represented include articles, clippings, directories, drafts, maps, posters, printed material and reports, with the bulk of the material comprised of clippings and reports.
Finally, John Hope Franklin's professional activities, especially his research and
writings, are documented in the large
Writings Series. The
Writings by Franklin Subseries includes small groupings of folders housing research and publicity material in support of Franklin's published books. One larger group of six boxes consists of research notes, photocopies, and other materials relating to his work on George Washington Williams. Reprints of many articles published by Franklin are also found in this subseries. The
Writings About Franklin Subseries includes a packet of
biographical material Franklin used in conjunction with the 1997 symposium held
in honor of the 50th anniversary of the publication of
From Slavery to Freedom. The
Writings by Others Subseries contains correspondence, manuscripts,
typescripts, proofs, and printed material sent by other authors to Franklin,
mostly for his review or response.

Detailed Description of Collection
Advisory Board for the President's Initiative on Race
(ABPIR) Series,
1972-1999,
bulk
1997-1998
(14 boxes)
Contains items Dr. Franklin gathered for his work on President
Clinton's race initiative,
"One America in the 21st
Century."
The material dates from 1972 to 1999, although the bulk of the
series dates from the year-long work of the Advisory Board, from 1997 to 1998. It is arranged into six subseries:
Meeting Notebooks, Writings for Board Consideration, Publicity
About the Advisory Board, Artifacts, ABPIR Oversize Materials, and
Audiovisual Materials (removed to the Audiovisuals Series for preservation purposes). Photographs related to Dr. Franklin's service on the advisory board are located in the Photographs Series. The series is primarily comprised of items sent to the board for consideration in its work (including books, reports, articles, serials, working papers,
information packets, booklets, multimedia packets, artifacts, audio- and
videocassettes); however, there are also advisory board meeting notebooks and
preparatory materials, as well as writings about board activities from their
website and newspapers across the United States. The series is strong on materials regarding
scholarly input into the deliberations of the board, but has few actual board
deliberations and final conclusions. The final report by the Advisory Board,
One America in the 21st Century is not
included but is available in Duke Libraries' general holdings.

These videos and sound recordings created by or assembled by John Hope Franklin are a rich source of information about Dr. Franklin's life and career and about race relations in the United States. Arranged into subseries by format and further into recordings of others and recordings of Dr. Franklin. The video cassettes are commercial productions that examine racism, prejudice, social conditions in the United States, and other race-related issues. Other sound recordings derive from Franklin's lectures and speeches on race, race relations in the U.S., and the historian's role in interpreting history; a substantial number of these recordings were made in the 1960s and 1970s. One set of tapes record a lengthy oral history interview of Franklin by A. Ballard, National Humanities Center, in which Franklin recounts events in his life from his earliest years in Oklahoma to his decision to go to the University of Chicago. A smaller number of commercial and original sound recordings vary from musical performances, including a compilation of Civil War songs performed by Franklin's former student, to gatherings of notable writers and historians. Use copies are available for most video and sound recordings.
