Preliminary Description of Unprocessed Collection
Accession 2000-0356
Attention: Some of the materials in this collection are not
immediately accessible, because they require further processing before use.
Please contact Research Services staff before visiting the Rare Book,
Manuscript, and Special Collections Library to use the collection. Note that
boxes 58-63, 78-79, 81-83, 86, and 88 contain mildewed material, some more
deteriorated than others.
Processing Notes: Gergen labeled many of the original boxes with
numbers or written clarifications of their contents. The archivist kept these
as the general type or subject of the processed boxes, even if the box did not
seem to contain material related to the description on the outside. In cases
where it was possible to discern the general content of miscellaneous,
incorrectly labeled, unlabeled, or loose documents at either a box or folder
level, that was done (often using brackets) while also keeping Gergen's labels.
Folders have also been marked
"[Loose Material]"
or
"[Unlabeled Material]"
to maintain original order as
much as possible. These folder titles, however, are not included in the box
list. A supplementary container list provides greater intellectual access by
rearranging the consecutively-numbered boxes of this list into broad subject
categories. It is appended to this document.
Restriction: Researchers must obtain Gergen's permission before
using any part of this collection.

Attention: Some of the materials in this collection are not
immediately accessible, because they require further processing before use.
Please contact Research Services staff before visiting the Rare Book,
Manuscript, and Special Collections Library to use the collection.
Processing Note: Gergen labeled many of the original boxes with
numbers or written clarifications of their contents. We have kept these as the
general type or subject of our processed boxes, even if the box does not seem
to contain material related to the description on the outside. In cases where
it was possible to discern the general content of miscellaneous, incorrectly
labeled, unlabeled, or loose documents at either a box or folder level, we have
done so (often using brackets) while also keeping Gergen's labels. Folders have
also been marked
"[Loose Material]"
or
"[Unlabeled Material]"
to maintain original order as
much as possible. These folder titles, however, are not included in the box
list. A supplementary container list provides greater intellectual access by
rearranging the current box numbers of this list into their original numbered
series of boxes as imposed by Gergen . It is appended to this document.
Restriction: Researchers must obtain Gergen's permission before
using any part of this collection. In addition, the collection contains
sensitive material throughout, including public records.

Rearrangement of Preliminary Container List
Accession 2000-0356
To provide greater access to the materials listed in the
preliminary container list, this quick virtual rearrangement by box has been
created. The archivist identified four broad categories that would benefit from
this kind of tracking: Presidential Campaign
Materials,
Speeches Written by Gergen,
Gergen-Imposed Box Labels and Numbers, and
Time Periods.
Presidential
Campaign Materials refers to any documents Gergen wrote or received,
including speeches, for the presidential campaigns of 1972, 1976, 1980, and
1984. Speeches Written by Gergen are divided by the
name of the person for whom they were written and for whom there are at least
several boxes of material: William E. Simon, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and
George Bush. Gergen-Imposed Box Labels and Numbers
is a rearrangement of the current box numbers into three sub-divisions that
Gergen had originally established. He had labeled the original boxes in which
the Library received the materials as White House Files (originally numbered
1-12), Pre-Reagan (originally numbered 7-15), and, simply, a series of Numbers
(originally numbered 2, 9-17).
Finally, the Time Periods category
provides access to the majority of the remaining material, which documents
Gergen's own speeches and appearances; subject files; office memos;
chronological files and telephone logs; daily planners; and personal, legal,
and financial papers. These documents have been divided into rough time periods
based on the presidential terms of office from 1969-1993.
Note that most boxes contain several kinds of materials, and
consequently are listed under multiple categories.

third is simply numbered.
