Preliminary Description of Unprocessed Collection

Accession 2002-0011

Boxes 27 and 40 contain sensitive documents (student and appointee recommendations). Patrons must sign a privacy rights waiver form before using this collection.
Some of the materials in this accession are not immediately accessible because they require further processing before use. Please contact Research Services staff before visiting the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library to use this collection.
Processing note: These materials have been processed as they were received.
All hanging files have been removed and replaced with empty folders. These empty folders divide the material that used to be enclosed in each original hanging file. Any tabs that were attached to the original hanging files have been paperclipped to these empty folders. Any hanging files without tabs are marked "Hanging file." The number of folders contained within each original hanging file has been noted to the right of the paperclipped tab/label.
Photographs in boxes 41-43 arrived in unlabeled envelopes. Each envelope was given a consecutive number ( "Group x" ) and the contents transferred to new photograph folders labeled with that number. Some original envelopes contained folders within them. These sub-groups have also been given consecutive numbers.
The accession includes 11 black scrapbooks, found in boxes 49-54. To distinguish one from another, all have been assigned a consecutive number that is paperclipped to the front cover.
Boxes 48-54 are oversize.
A supplementary container list provides additional intellectual access by rearranging the consecutively-numbered boxes of this list into broad subject categories. It is appended to this document.

Rearrangement of Preliminary Container List

To provide additional access to the materials listed in the preliminary container list, this quick virtual rearrangement by box has been created. The archivist identified three broad categories that would benefit from this kind of tracking: Speeches,Secretary of Commerce Records, and Calendars and Monthly Planners. The Speeches category is organized into groups by dates (1960s-1977; 1977-1979; 1979-2001). The contents of this first category overlap with the second, Secretary of Commerce Records. It is organized into groups by type of material (calendars and monthly planners; correspondence, minutes, notes, briefing books, etc.; photograph albums; scrapbooks; speeches). The third category, Calendars and Monthly Planners, also overlaps with the second, and is organized into groups by dates (1960s-1977; 1977-1979; 1979-2001).
Note that many of the box numbers are repeated, as each box usually contains material from several categories.
