Collection Overview

This collection documents the creative process that went into the development of advertisements from the 1940s-1970s. The materials consist primarily of sketches, paintings, photographs, roughs, and layouts as well as finished ads in proof form. A variety of color, black-and-white photographs, and black-and-white contact sheets used for ad campaigns are also present. One of the boxes includes some storyboards (or copies) for TV commercials to be produced by Ogilvy and Mather. The most frequently represented client is Gilbey's (Gin and Vodka). Others include Rand McNally, Ogilvy and Mather house ads, International Paper, IBM, El Producto and other cigars, Staffordwear, Steuben Glass, Revlon, Ronson, INCO (International Nickel), Puerto Rico (Economic Development), Toro, Cinzano, Maidenform Bras, Newsweek, Peugot, various liquors and cordials, and more. There are a few miscellaneous items, including original art signed by Paul Rand for what is most likely a poster. Two folders are labeled "Proofs-Fletcher Richards" and contain mostly liquor ads. Much of the material is large in format. This collection forms part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, and Marketing History
