Biographical Note

Originally a resident of Murphy, NC, John Ira Erwin came to Trinity College in 1912. While he was an undergraduate, he belonged to the Sigma Phi Epsilon and the Phi Mu Kappa fraternities, the Weaver College Club, the McDowell County Club, the Mountain Boomer's Club, the Chemistry and Science Clubs, and the Y.M.C.A. He graduated from Trinity College in 1916. He later completed a course in the Aviation School in Atlanta, GA.

Collection Arrangement

Erwin included these items in a 29-page, string-bound patent scrapbook published by the College Memorabilia Company, with the Trinity College seal on the cover. Loose items were placed in envelopes, for preservation.

Detailed Description of Collection

Scrapbook, 1915-1916

This scrapbook contains autograph pages, photographs, clippings, and memorabilia from Erwin's extracurricular life at Trinity College from 1915-1916. The major subjects of the photographs are Trinity athletics, Sigma Phi Epsilon, 1916 commencement, campus scenes and other outdoor snapshots of Erwin's acquaintances. One of the pictures is of Trinity's campus in the snow, showing buildings that no longer exist, including the original library. A few other photographs highlight Trinity's baseball field and pole-vaulters. Also included are telegrams, Sigma Phi Epsilon memorabilia, train and athletics tickets, hotel and other business logos. These items are arranged approximately by subject.
