Biographical Note

Henry Eugene Kolbe came to Duke from Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated with an A.B. degree in 1933 and was Phi Beta Kappa. He worked at Duke in Charles Jordan's office until the end of October 1934. Kolbe joined the Virginia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South where he served as pastor until September 1942. He moved to Wisconsin and continued working as a pastor while attending Garrett Biblical Institute from where he earned a B.D. in 1945. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1946 and 1948, respectively. Kolbe taught at Earlham College, DePauw University and at Garrett Theological Seminary.

Collection Overview

The collection contains four bound volumes of essays, notes and writings written by Kolbe during his years at Duke. Also included is a small set of correspondence and eleven photographs, which include images of campus construction and the Duke University Student Volunteer Movement Retreat from 1930. The images are identified. The material ranges in date from 1928-1934.
