Is Marriage a Failure?

Is Marriage a Failure?

Is marriage a failure? this question I hear
Many times and quite often of late,
Perhaps it was started because it’s leap year
By some ancient maiden anxious to mate;
Maybe she proposed to a gallant young man,
And that he said, no, I am sure,
And then through her mind disappointed thoughts ran,
So this question she started her feelings to cure.

It has bothered our scholars and statesmen,
Our millionaires and ministers, too,
The lawyer and the artist who handle the pen,
And a good many more than these few;
If a young man marries and gets a good wife
And a few hundred thousand in gold,
And she’s faithful and true to him all through life,
You can bet all you’re worth he’s not sold.

But another man marries a maiden divine,
And of course she’s an angel at first,
Until her ma comes, then it’s not so fine
To be by a mother-in-law cursed!
Wifey flirts with young men in a manner quite rash,
And he tries in vain her to cure,
And one day finds out that she’s gone with his cash,
Then marriage is a failure, be sure.
