Preamble:

The Divinity School by and large has used Turabian's A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations which is largely based upon the Chicago Manual of Style (14th edition). This brief style guide will follow the examples of Turabian's guide. An annotated bibliography of style guides is below. See Citing Wesley for more information on proper citation for citing from John Wesley's work.

Footnotes versus Author-date:

Turabian following the Chicago Manual of Style (14th edition) allows authors a choice between using footnotes with bibliographies and text notes with author-date citations. If your professor has a preference, use it. Otherwise, be consistent. Examples are included for both.

Alexander, Patrick H. et al., eds. SBL Handbook of Style : for Near Eastern, Biblical, and early Christian studies. Peabody, Mass.: Hendrickson, 1999.

Use this style guide first when citing near eastern, biblical and early Christian texts. Besides citation style, this handbook also contains information on transliterating, indexing, capitalization, and proper abbreviations.

This is the style guide upon which much else is based and may be useful to refer to when no other source answers your particular concern.

Turabian, Kate L. A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. 6th ed. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996.

As the title somewhat implies, Turabian's book is essentially the a condensed Chicago Manual of Style written for students writing papers rather than authors writing books.
