North Carolina Department of Transportation Geologist Rick Lockamy identifying points on the map to take core rock samples, Sprinkle Creek, Madison County, NC, 1994
Once he finds the points on the map, he locates them on the ground. Then he drills to various depths and takes rock samples with a hollow stem auger to give the engineers and contractors information they can use to place their bids.
“It’s hard to believe,” Lockamy says, “that if we were standing in this spot seven years from now we would get flattened by a tractor-trailer.” --Rob Amberg
