Academic Technology Consultant for Languages

Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Center for Instructional Technology (cit.duke.edu), the Academic Technology Consultant (ATC) provides support for faculty to encourage the effective use of instructional technology in key academic disciplines and programs at Duke.   The ATC works within a collaborative, team-based environment and coordinates activities with other CIT staff, the University’s Office of Information Technology, Library staff and school-based technology support staff.

Responsibilities

• Provides technical and pedagogical consulting and training, and project support, to help faculty and staff effectively integrate electronic tools and materials into their teaching.
• Evaluates and supports academic technology tools for general and discipline-specific use such as learning management systems, multimedia and graphics tools, text analysis programs, data visualization software, lab simulation tools and specialized databases. Provides training, consulting and other support for the learning management system(s) used at Duke.
• Develops web-based information resources, which enable faculty and students to use instructional technology successfully.
• Works with Library staff, academic departments and technology service providers throughout the University on projects to explore new hardware and software tools, and to advocate needs and obtain resources for faculty and students which are appropriate for their academic disciplines.
• Coordinates, develops and organizes events and programs such as workshops, lectures, demonstrations and training series to inform faculty on trends in instructional technology, methods for effective use of technologies in teaching, and use of specialized tools.
• Works with staff in other parts of the University to integrate academic technology tools into existing computing infrastructure or to help plan needed upgrades to facilities and systems.
• Reviews professional literature; networks with instructional technology professionals outside the University; and participates in activities to stay informed about trends in instructional technology.
• Promotes CIT services and resources through presentations for departments and campus groups.
• Participates in on-call support rotation for instructional technology tools, specifically the learning management system.
• Participates in Library and University committees and work groups as relevant to CIT goals and interests.
• Performs other duties as assigned or appropriate in support of CIT activities and programs.

Supervisory Responsibilities
• Trains and mentors student employees working on technology projects.
• May supervise staff supporting specialized instructional facilities on campus, such as the language labs.

Qualifications

Education

Required: BA/BS or combination of relevant education and experience.

Preferred: BA/BS or MA/MS in a language-related discipline.

Experience

Required: The ideal candidate will have a record of innovation and creativity in identifying and integrating technological solutions to pedagogical needs. • Two to five years experience in instructional technology support; • Experience with language pedagogy and multilingual computing; • Knowledge of widely-used hardware, software, applications, resources and techniques within an academic environment; • Experience with Web authoring tools, Web-based collaboration environments, basic multimedia tools, and presentation software; • Experience in identifying and integrating technological solutions to pedagogical needs; • Experience developing and delivering training to an audience with varying levels of technical understanding; • Demonstrated ability to initiate and complete instructional technology projects; • Excellent time management and project management skills; demonstrated ability to manage a complex workload, prioritize tasks and use good judgment in providing services based on goals; • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to establish good working relationships with a wide range of people within an academic community; • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team; • Demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer services.

Preferred: • Second language proficiency or experience with second language learning; • Prior experience with instructional technology support within a higher education environment; • Experience successfully supervising staff; • Knowledge of issues related to technology facilities management; • Evidence of ability to generate faculty enthusiasm for and engagement in the use of new technologies for teaching; • Experience with learning management systems, especially with Blackboard; • Experience designing and developing Web-based instructional resources which incorporate graphics, audio and video; • Technical expertise sufficient to develop or consult on development of applications.

Working Conditions

• Normal office environment
• Occasional weekend/evening shifts required
• Occasional travel required

Salary and Benefits

Salary dependent on qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package includes 15 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
