Copyright & Permissions Intern

Occupational Summary

The Copyright and Permissions Intern focuses his/her efforts on assisting with online courses at Duke.  The Intern will examine course materials and determine where reliance on fair use is appropriate and where permission must be sought. 

Responsibilities

Working with librarians, including appropriate subject specialists, as well as others involved in new scholarly communications initiatives to identify needs and key people to assist the outreach efforts, the intern:

  • Reviews online course materials and evaluates the rights situation in regard to any third-party material contained therein.
  • Using criteria developed working with the Director of the Copyright and Scholarly Communications Office, assesses where it is appropriate to rely on fair use.
  • Seeks appropriate material that is licensed for non-commercial educational use to substitute into course materials when appropriate.
  • When needed, contacts rights holders to obtain permission to use (and, sometimes, reformat) materials used in courseware.
  • Gathers data regarding the use of the COPE (Compact for Open-Access Publishing Equity) fund to reimburse open access article processing charges and research open access publishing patterns of faculty applicants to the fund; researches other data about COPE funds at other institutions; prepares reports on the use of the COPE fund as requested.
  • Maintains detailed documentation for permission decisions.
  • Maintains a log of consultations for the Copyright and Scholarly Communications Office.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

Required: BA/BS and enrolled in or recent graduate of an ALA accredited MLS Program or accredited Juris Doctor Program.

Experience

Required:

Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; solid organizational skills with a strong attention to detail; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; working knowledge of MS Office applications.

Preferred:

Some background or course work in intellectual property; strong interest in copyright law.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
  • Normal office environment

Hiring Rate

$15.50 per hour. The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.

Hours

The internship is a temporary, part-time position available 15 hours per week between August 2013 – May 2014.
