Hartman Center Intern - RBMSCL

Occupational Summary

Under the supervision of the Technical Services Archivist of the Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing (HCSAMH), this position will primarily provide technical services support for the HCSAMH collections during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Responsibilities

• Processes modern manuscript collections related to advertising, marketing, and sales. The main project for the 2008-2009 academic year involves coordinating the reformatting of audiovisual materials for a number of collections related to outdoor advertising.
• Creates finding aids for the collections and encodes the text of inventories for the Web.  Completes unfinished finding aids as needed.
• Participates in HCSAMH outreach programming, publications, exhibits and event planning.
• Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education

Required: BA/BS and current enrollment in a graduate program in Public History, Library & Information Science (accredited by the American Library Association), or equivalent. By Fall Semester 2008, must have completed at least one course in archival theory and practice.

Experience

Required: Strong analytical, organizational, and writing skills; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; capacity to take initiative and thrive in a rapidly changing environment; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; accurate and detail-oriented; strength to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 40 pounds; and tolerance of dirt, dust, and inactive mold spores (protective clothing provided).

Preferred: Prior experience processing archival material; familiarity with Encoded Archival Description and national processing and descriptive standards, including APPM and DACS. Hiring Rate

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds and unpack, shelve and shift large quantities of library materials
  • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
  • Frequent bending, crouching, stooping
  • Normal office environment
  • Occasional weekend shifts required

Hiring Rate

$15.00 per hour

The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.

Hours

15 hours per week. 1 September 2008 - 31 May 2009.
