Library Assessment Intern - Center for Instructional Technology

Occupational Summary

Duke University Libraries seeks applicants for a new internship designed to support library assessment projects.  The intern will work under the supervision of the Head of Program Evaluation in the Center for Instructional Technology and will also collaborate with librarians and library staff in many areas including Reference, Library Instruction, and Technical Services.

Responsibilities

• Conduct and analyze data from interviews of library staff about assessment and reporting needs
• Analyze qualitative and quantitative data gathered about library services and programs
• Analyze web usage data for library web sites and create summary reports for internal use
• Enter data on library department outcomes into WEAVE assessment system
• Conduct literature reviews and write brief summaries for a library audience
• Develop written resources and presentation materials on assessment topics
• Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education

Required: BA/BS and either 1.) enrollment in a MLS program accredited by the American Library Association or 2.) a graduate level program in the Social Sciences, or equivalent experience in an academic library.

Experience

Required: Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; willingness to speak to diverse individuals and groups. Intermediate Excel (formulas, sorting/filtering, charts).

Preferred: Experience conducting interviews and managing qualitative and quantitative data. Experience with simple web content editing systems such as wikis and blogs and basic knowledge of HTML. Experience exporting and importing data in CSV or other delimited files to and from Excel. Basic understanding of relational databases.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds and unpack, shelve and shift large quantities of library materials
  • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
  • Frequent bending, crouching, stooping
  • Normal office environment
  • Occasional weekend shifts required

Hiring Rate

$15.00 per hour

The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.

Hours

15 hours per week. June 2, 2008 - December 12, 2008.
