Occupational Summary

Data Services in the Duke University Libraries seeks applicants for a new internship designed to provide an overview of numeric/geospatial data services in a research library while providing the intern with the experience to develop numeric and/or geospatial collections. In previous years, interns have built collections in the library's data catalog, helped design online data collections, and provided research services. The intern will work under the supervision of the Coordinator of Data Services.

Responsibilities

  • Develops metadata for Duke Libraries’ numeric and geospatial collections under the direction of the Coordinator of Data Services.
  • Assists in building numeric and geospatial resources for Duke Libraries.
  • With the assistance of the Data and GIS Librarians, provides support for electronic data sets and geospatial resources.

Education

Required: BA/BS and 1.) enrollment in a MLS program accredited by the American Library Association or 2.) enrollment in a graduate level program in the Social Sciences, or 3.) equivalent experience in an academic library.

Experience

Required: Familiarity with library metadata standards; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently and as a member of a team, willingness to speak to diverse groups; desire and interest to work with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and library staff. Preference will be given to applicants who have working experience using statistical and/or geospatial data collections. Students with a focus on Information Science are strongly encouraged to apply.

Preferred: Knowledge of data management software, metadata, and library systems.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds and unpack, shelve and shift large quantities of library materials
  • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
  • Frequent bending, crouching, stooping
  • Normal office environment

Hiring Rate

$17.00 per hr

The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.
