Librarian for Mathematics and Physics

Three Year Term Appointment
The Math and Physics Librarian develops, manages, and evaluates the mathematics and physics materials in the libraries’ collections.  S/He provides specialized reference assistance and instruction to library users.  Working within a team-based environment, s/he interacts regularly with Collection Development and other members of the Duke University Libraries.  S/He reports to the Head of Research and Reference Assistance.

Responsibilities

• Provides specialized math and physics reference and research assistance to students, faculty, and visiting scholars within the library and in departmental locations as needed.
• Serves as primary liaison to and advocate for the Mathematics and Physics Departments, initiates and maintains close working relationships with faculty to ensure that the Libraries’ collections support their research and teaching needs.
• Seeks opportunities for partnerships with faculty and library staff to integrate instruction into classes through Blackboard and traditional means, using all formats and communication tools that best facilitate research and pedagogy (blogs, podcasts, social networking tools, and emerging Web 2.0 technologies).
• Selects and manages collections in all formats for mathematics and physics; develops, implements and reviews collection development policies for math and physics; monitors and reviews firm orders and approval plans; manages the materials budget for mathematics and physics.
• Participates in the library instruction program, especially for Math/Physics classes.
• Monitors, reviews, and develops cooperative collection development relationships within the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN).
• Works at the reference desk, including evening, holiday, and weekend rotations; answers reference questions and instructs patrons in person or via phone, virtual reference, instant messenger, or e-mail.  
• Participates in the selection, management, and provision of reference resources and services and in the development of public services policies.
• Reviews professional literature; networks with reference, instruction and other library professionals outside the University; and participates in activities to stay informed about trends in supporting research, reference, instruction and collection development for math/physics disciplines.
• Participates in other library, university, and professional activities as appropriate.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

Required: Advanced degree in a relevant subject area or combination of relevant education and experience.

Preferred: MLS from an ALA-accredited program.

Experience

Required: At least three years of experience in reference and/or collection development in an academic, research, or large public library (including collection development responsibilities from a variety of sources) or comparable academic experience; demonstrated knowledge of research in mathematics and physics; demonstrated ability and commitment to working in a technology-rich environment; must be service-oriented, flexible, and possess excellent communication skills; working knowledge of MS Office applications; demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer service; demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with staff at all levels of an organization.

Preferred: Prior experience working in an academic research library; familiarity with trends in academic and research libraries as well as knowledge of the issues confronting higher education; demonstrated leadership in establishing and implementing successful new programs; working knowledge of the ExLibris Aleph system.

Salary and Benefits

Salary dependent on qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance; retirement plan options; and educational assistance and tuition grants.
