• Provides vision and leadership in developing planning and implementing activities in support of teaching research skills, information literacy, and instruction programs to the Duke University community of students, researchers, and faculty.
• Provides leadership for the Libraries' participation in campus education initiatives to ensure that the Libraries remain partners in the ongoing development and assessment of programs and services, such as the FOCUS program, Writing 20 and the first-year experience.
• Participates in the development and delivery of instruction activities and oversees the creation of instructional materials and services utilizing a variety of formats and delivery methods.
• Collaborates with instruction and outreach librarians, subject specialists, discipline coordinators, Center for Instructional Technology and faculty to orient, design and deliver programs that cultivate the practice and scholarship of discipline-based teaching and curriculum design.
• Engages library staff, faculty and students in evaluation and outcomes assessment efforts that look at quality, learner performance and improvements in student learning.
• Contributes to the annual reviews of all public services librarians involved with library instruction.
• Collaborates and coordinates outreach activities with the Duke Writing Center, Student Affairs; and identifies other opportunities to offer innovative and integrated instruction programs.
• Develops and provides training in instructional techniques for colleagues.
• Manages the operations of the Instruction and Outreach Department: sets goals, hires, supervises and evaluates staff; prepares and manages the departmental budget; evaluates the quality of the department’s services and operations; analyzes and reports on the work of the department, documenting progress and identifying trends.
• Participates in the overall leadership of the Public Services division and of the library through membership in the Public Services Council; actively contributes to library-wide initiatives; serves on library and University committees.
• Contributes to and is highly active in local, consortial, regional and national meetings, conferences and workshops to stay abreast of developments/trends in instruction, outreach and assessment; represents Duke University Libraries as appropriate.
• Reviews professional literature; networks with instruction and other instruction and outreach librarians outside the University; and participates in activities to stay informed about trends in supporting information literacy in academic research institutions.
• Consults regularly with counterparts at other Duke Libraries and within the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN).
• Participates in reference services as scheduled.
Supervisory Responsibilities
• Supervises the Coordinator of First Year Instruction, one Instruction and Outreach librarian, and library school instruction interns.
Required: MLS from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
Required: At least three years of relevant library instruction experience in an academic library or equivalent teaching experience; understanding of pedagogy, learning styles and instructional design; experience designing and employing evaluation and assessment tools and techniques; strong public service orientation; demonstrated command of the concepts, techniques, and tools related to face-to-face instruction, and familiarity with web-based instruction and learning.; ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, and library colleagues; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; able to work independently and as a member of a team; working knowledge of MS Office applications; demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer services; demonstrated record of ongoing professional development..
Preferred: Prior experience working in an academic research library; experience with developing and assessing instruction programs or interactive learning environments; record of successfully implementing use of emergent technology in library instruction or reference settings.
