Beach Scene, Oil on canvas, 20" x 30," by Jacob Maris
A small Dutch sailing craft is beached at low tide. Next to it stands a cart drawn by a gray horse into which the crew are transferring cargo. This dark grouping contrasts with the light, cloud-filled sky behind. The artist, Jacob Maris (1838-1899), was a Dutch painter who worked in the Hague. Jacob Maris, "…with his brothers Matthijs and Willem, formed what has come to be known as the Hague school of painters, influenced by both the 17th- century Dutch masters and the Barbizon school." The painting is located in the lobby, to the left and behind the main desk.
C.C. Dula also donated Charles Emile Jacque's Tending the Flock which hangs in Lilly Library's Main Lobby.
