Cheang Park Chew, of Shanghai, China was a friend and business associate of  James B. Duke and James A. Thomas. In 1895, Cheang Park Chew engaged in business transactions with James B. Duke.  In 1907, Chew traveled to the United States to meet with Duke and the two became friends.  They worked together in successful mercantile pursuits in China.  Chew was the first to contribute to the Duke Memorial upon the death of James B. Duke.  This painting was given to Duke University by Cheang Park Chew in 1930.
