Dorothy Quincy Hancock Read (later Mrs. James A. Thomas), Photograph, 13.5" x 10.5" (matted, in a 20" x 16" frame)

This is a photograph of Dorothy Quincy Hancock Read wearing a Mandarin imperial robe and headdress. She is standing on the steps of the American Legation in Peking [Beijing] in 1920. In the background is a marble lion similar to those at the entrance to the Thomas Room.  This photograph is located on the second floor in the north foyer, at the entry to the Thomas Reading Room.  Dorothy Q. H. Read was born en route to China in 1892.  She lived in China, Siberia, Russia, and England.  She taught at a private school in Russia and was involved with the women's suffrage movement in England.
