Mary Duke Lyon (1853-1893) was the daughter of Washington Duke, sister of James B. Duke and Benjamin N. Duke, and wife of Robert E. Lyon. Mary Elizabeth Duke and her brother Benjamin Duke attended the New Garden School (later known as Guilford College) in 1871.  Known for her business abilities, Mary Duke "managed a phase of the work of W. Duke, Sons and Company".  Mary Duke and both of her brothers made contributions to Trinity College.  This portrait was transferred from Benjamin N. Duke's Durham home, Four Acres, in 1960.  This painting is located on the second floor in the north foyer on the right wall at the top of the stairs.
