Duke University Libraries presents the winning submissions from the 2003/2004 writing contest co-sponsored by the Gothic Bookshop and the Friends of the Duke University Libraries. Graduate/professional winner Hank Kinsley and Eric Dixon, the winning undergraduate, each received a $500 gift certificate to the Gothic Bookshop.

Students were invited to write the short story, essay, or poem inspired by this 1975 black and white photograph by William Gedney of a woman and man seated at a kitchen table. The photograph is from the collection of Duke's Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library.
