Summary Catalog of Compositions

A compilation of the compositions listed in Weinmann's thematic catalog (WeinmannWanhalCat) together with compositions included in Wahal's estate (Nachlaß) [in brackets], those in Gottfried Johann Dlabacž's Lexikon article, the string quartets listed in JonesQuartets and the symphonies in BryanWanhal. The numbering system is adopted from WeinmannWanhalCat. Until a thorough study of all the genre can be made, the total number of works, 1377, must be considered a rough estimate. See also the Works list in the article "Vanhal" in New Groves Dictionary of Music, 2nd ed. (2001)

I. Symphonies: [not cataloged by Weinmann]: 77

1 authentic [single mvt] and 76 probably-authentic [3 or 4 mvts]); see the annotated Thematic Catalog in Chapter 5 of BryanWanhal.

Nachlaß: [32]; Dlabacž: 100 Simphonien

II. Concertos: 53

a. Piano: 19 [16]

b. Violin: 15 [9]

c. Viola: 3 [2?] (originally for Violoncello or Bassoon)

d. Violoncello: 4 [2]

e. Flute: 11 [3]

f. Oboe: 1 [0]

g. Clarinet: 1 (originally for Flute)

h. Bassoon: 4 [4] (one for two Bassoons)

i. Contrabass: 1 [0]

The Nachlaß further contained 9 concertos for organ and one concerto for clarino. WeinmannWanhalCat lacks a category for organ concertos.  Dlabacž: "Many concertos for various instruments in different years"

III. Divertimenti, Serenades, Partitas, Cassations, etc.:

WeinmannWanhalCat gives information for 29 divertimenti but the overlapping of differing genre (e.g., divertimenti vs. str qts, or vs. trios with clavier, or vs. sonatas for pf with vn and vc, etc.) makes an accurate accounting impossible at this time.

The Nachlaß contained 16 Partitas [Partien] for students: solos, duets, trios, quartets for various instruments.

Dlabacž: "6 Divertimenti in 1796"

IV. Quintets for Strings and Winds: 17

V. Quartets:

a. String Quartets: 53 [see below]

The Nachlaß contained no quartets (unless they were included in a large package of undescribed older compositions).

Dlabacž: "100 Quartetten."

JonesQuartets considers 53 of the 74 string quartets in his list to be "authenticated." This number, 53, is doubtless more accurate than Weinmann's 95 or Dlabacž's 100. The following summary by tonality includes 94 str qts that, to my knowledge, have been attributed to Vanhal: C1-10, c1-2; D1-8; d1; Eb1-17; E1-6; F1-14; G1-13; g1-3; A1-6; Bb1-14.

The Nachlaß contained 10 organ fugues and 29 items for Generalbass.

XVII. Occasional compositions (GelegenheitsKompositionen): 58

a. Programmatic pieces such Die Schlacht bei Würzburg 17

b. Songs with Clavier: 41

The Nachlaß also contained various pieces for guitar, and pieces for czakan.

XVIII. Dance music of all kinds (aller Besetzungen): 47

The Nachlass contained "various dances and marches. "Dlabacž includes several entries of a variety of dance-types: Minuetti, Menuetten, Englische, Deutsche, Redoutdeutsche, Allemandes, Ländler.

XIX. Masses: 48[?], 2 Requiems and Cantata: 51

Dlabacž includes 25 large and small masses, 2 Requiems (for his parents), and "an oratorio for the convent at Varaždin in Croatia whose performance he [Wanhal] himself directed." Dlabacž also lists the Trauergesang bei dem Tode Josephs des II which he describes as a Cantata of 34 pages, an important work. The Nachlaß contained 26 Masses and 2 Requiems.

XX. Smaller Church Works:

a. Litanies: 10 [2]

b. Vespers: 3

c. Motets: ca. 32

d. Graduals: 10

g. Salve Reginas: 32, Stabat Mater: 1, Regina Coeli: 1

h. Te Deum: 1

i. Tantum Ergo: 15

j. Antiphons, Hymns, Psalms, and Responses: 15

The Nachlaß contained 10 Salve Reginas and 1 Stabat Mater. It also included 1 Alma Regina, 2 Alma, 1 Veni Sanctae, 1 Libera and "ein Benedictus zum Einlegen." Dlabacž lists 30 Salve Reginas and draws special attention to the Stabat Mater which he calls a "great and beautiful work."

XXI. Opera

An additional category not in WeinmannWanhalCat should be included because Dlabacž specifically lists two operas, Demofonte and Trionfo di Clelia whose existence must have been mentioned to him by Wanhal.
