Information was derived from the limited sources available at the close of World War II; every aspect has been reevaluated. The scores for C6, d1, G8, A2, a2, and Bb1 included in vol. II were based primarily on prints by Bremner and J.J. Hummel. See p ii for identification of their sources.

BryanWanhal------, Johann Wanhal, Viennese Symphonist: His Life and His Musical Environment. New York: Pendragon Press, 1997. Â Table of Contents

The biographical section of this volume presents an analysis of the information sources and a new interpretation of Wanhal's life and his position in the musical community. The thematic catalog of Wanhal's symphonies includes incipits of all the movements and all the copies, both manuscript and printed, that the author has found. Further significant additions to our knowledge of both Wanhal, his contemporaries, and their modi operandi are provided by studies of the manuscript copies themselves. They include a record of the groups of copyists, along with summaries and samples of individual copyists' hands, and the papers they used. The descriptions of the manuscripts are complemented by a study of the publishers and their confusing opus number systems as well as pertinent information about the individual symphonies. For those interested in Wanhal himself, the list of his autographs and analysis of his handwriting should also be useful.

Prof. Heartz’s eagerly awaited book became available during the final days of my efforts to complete this book. It is obviously one of the most important contributions to a specialized history of Wanhal’s milieu—indeed it contains and acknowledges some material provided by me. Unfortunately, however, I have had insufficient time to study it and incorporate more than a few of the items that would be useful for this study. I hope to do so in the future.

This book of essays arrived just as I was making the final adjustments for the publication of this book. There is, therefore, insufficient time to address aspects that are pertinent to these studies of Wanhal and his music. Perhaps most important is that in the context of more carefully defining the role of Vienna as a rallying place rather than the center of a "Viennese School " (my interpretation) it becomes ever clearer that the real Viennese composers are not Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Gluck, who were imported from afar and lived in Vienna for limited spans of time, but Dittersdorf, who was born there, and worked there for important parts (but not all) of his career and Wanhal, who lived there throughout his maturity— more than 50 years. It might be said that Wahal was the most Viennese of any of the prominent Viennese composers!

An excellent dissertation and the most important source for information on Wanhal’s string quartets. Vol. 1 contains a review of the antecedents of the modern string quartet, a biographical overview of Wanhal’s life, an historical and analytical discussion of the quartets (separate chapters each devoted to designated historical periods), and an appraisal of Wanhal’s contribution to the string quartet genre. It also contains a thematic catalog (with all the movements) of 74 quartets found by Jones with attributions to Wahal—53 are "authenticated," a list of the printed editions (with tp illustrations), a concordance, and a bibliography. Vols. 2 and 3 contain scores for nine quartets, and examples that illustrate the analytical discussions in vol. 1.

KroneWanhal Krone, Olaf. "Johann Baptist Wanhal (1739-1813) und seine Mäzene." Concerto 144 (1999), 25-30.

An important article which provides several previously-unknown pieces of information about Wanhal, e.g., that his favorite teacher, Anton Erban, was a pupil of Bohuslav Cernohorsky and, most importantly, about the influences of Wanhal’s early patrons on his crucial decision when he returned from Italy in 1771. It discusses the families of the Countess Schaffgotsch, Baron Issak Wolfgang Riesch, and Count Ladislaus Erdödy and their influences on Wanhal’s life. Further, it points out that the Schaffgotschs from Schlesia and the Erdödys from Hungary were among the most powerful of the long-established families of central-Europe. As members of the upper-nobility their position in society was much superior to the Riesch’s who immigrated from Zurich in the eighteenth century, acquired a large fortune, and settled in Dresden. Krone concludes that, after Wanhal returned from Italy, Count Ladislaus Erdödy exercised his pre-eminence by taking Wanhal to his castle in Vara_din, Croatia—away from the grip of Baron Riesch and Vienna. It verifies the belief that Wanhal did not suffer deep depression or go mad in 1770. Riesch later canceled Wanhal’s debt so that he returned to Vienna at will.

The family Schaffgotsch was split into several lines in the 14th century. The line in the Netherlands, named Schaep van dem Dam, was built in 1364 and existed well into the 18th century. The last man of this line, Helmig Maximilian Schaep van dem Dam, died in Jan. 23, 1729. This Dutch line of the Schaffgotsch family continued contact with the other branches of the family. Some of their members may have emigrated to Bohemia, especially since following the 30-years religious wars (1618-48), when Bohemia was so destroyed that there were uninhabited regions, the churches in the Netherlands were mostly Protestant and those in Bohemia were mostly catholic. Wanhal's ancestors, as bonded-servants, might, therefore, have came from the Netherlands (as Weinmann has suggested); it could have happened during or shortly after the 30-years wars. The theory does not conflict with Fišer's researches, because Fišer's earliest reference to Wanhal is dated 1676, well after the 30 years wars, when the "new" immigrants in Bohemia had already lost their Dutch inheritance and begun to mix with the older population.

Vol. 26 [Twelve-note to Wagner tuba], pp. 254-258: the article "Vanhal" written and signed by Paul R. Bryan is an original contribution, i.e. not a revision of Milan Poštolka’s article in NG1. It was based on original research in primary archives during the years 1967-1997. It differs in most ways from Poštolka’s, e.g., regarding the spelling of Wanhal’s name and many important biographical details, especially where he followed the leads of Charles Burney and Ernst Ludwig Gerber concerning the course of Wanhal’s work immediately following his return from Italy in 1771.

The article that appears in the printed version of NG2 contains, furthermore, an erroneous illustration which was inserted in spite on my protests: the title page from a print of op. 7 issued by J.J. Hummel. Its caption: "Title-page of Vanhal’s Six Symphonies op. 7 (Berlin and Amsterdam: Hummel, c1770" is misleading because the symphony it identifies is by Rosetti; furthermore, the print itself was issued in 1780. Op. 7 is discussed in BryanWanhal, 142. The same print was previously used in the article in NG1; I speculate that it was reused in NG2 as a cost-saving device. I will continue my efforts to have it eliminated or changed in the on-line version.

Other problems are troubling about my article "Vanhal" as it appears in NG2. Consistent with my belief about the proper spelling of Wanhal’s name, the article should have been included under W in volume no. 27. The opening statement that Wanhal was a Bohemian composer who lived in Vienna was not written by me. In fact he was a Viennese composer who was born in Bohemia. In addition I am embarrassed about the final editing whereby there are numerous errors in capitalization etc. in the WORKS list.

VanhalSammlSondheimer------. Sinfonie, C dur. Nr. 29 der Sammlung Sondheimer, Werke aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Ed. Robert Sondheimer. London: Edition Bernoulli, 1933. (= C16

I consider the authenticity of this symphony, C16, to be highly-questionable. It was probably composed by Sterkel. See the citation in Chapter 5, the thematic catalog in BryanWanhal.

VanhalSymphKneusslin------. Symphonie, A-moll. ed. Fritz Kneusslin. Zurich: Hug and Co., 1947.Â

This is an edition of a2. It is unsatisfactory because it lacks one movement, lacks the proper instrumentation, and is based on inferior sources. See the citation in Chapter 5, the thematic catalog in BryanWanhal.
