Sam Stephenson Talks About the Jazz Loft Project

Thursday, 2 March 2006, 4:30pm, Perkins Library Rare Book Room
Sam Stephenson, director of the Jazz Loft Project, will speak about the Project's work to preserve and catalog about 3,000 hours of recordings and almost 40,000 images by photographer W. Eugene Smith. Smith created the photographs and recordings from 1957-1965 in a Manhattan building where major jazz musicians of the day met and played.

The Jazz Loft Project, organized by Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies in cooperation with the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, and the Smith estate, is also conducting oral history interviews with all surviving loft participants, some 300 musicians.

The Bryan Center deck is recommended for parking. This lecture is part of the Engaging Faculty Series, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Duke University Libraries. Free and open to everyone.
