Echoes of the Past: Sounds of the American Civil War

Drawing from the historic sheet music holdings of the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library, performers will explore the Civil War through lyrics and music from both sides of the conflict. Vocalists include Penelope Jensen, soprano; mezzo-soprano Caryl Thomason Price; student tenor Michael Hirata; and Lewis Moore, baritone.

Several instruments from the Duke Music Instrument Collections will also be featured:  Randall Love will play a large pre-war (c.1832) square piano, and Don Eagle will perform on 19th-century keyed bugles and cornets.

Friday, September 12, 4pm, Perkins Library's Biddle Rare Book Room.  Limited free parking on the quad in front of the Duke Chapel. This event is part of the Rare Music in the Rare Book Room series co-sponsored by the Duke University Libraries and the Duke University Musical Instrument Collections.
