Christophe Fricker has won the Hermann Hesse Förderpreis, a prestigious prize that recognizes the most promising young German poets. Fricker, Language Program Director in Duke's Department of Germanic Languages and Literature, received the award for his book Das schöne Auge des Betrachters (The Beautiful Eye of the Beholder). Many of Professor Fricker's poems have been translated into English,in some cases by his Duke undergraduate students.
The judges for the Hermann Hesse Förderpreis comprise the literary editors of the best-known German language newspapers in Europe, including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Die Welt, and the Neue Züricher Zeitung. The award comes with a 5,000 Euro check and will be formally presented this Novemberin Karlsruhe, Germany.
Fricker's book is currently featured in an exhibit on the second floor of Bostock Library, adjacent to the offices of the Libraries' International and Area Studies Department. The exhibit will remain on view through arly October.
