Sunday, 10 January, 3pm, Durham County Library, Main Library Auditorium, 300 N. Roxboro St.
Jerry Cotten, retired photographic archivist for the North Carolina Collection at UNC, will present a program on trailblazing NC female photographer Bayard Wootten (1875-1959). Cotten is the author of Light and Air: the Photography of Bayard Wootten.
Wootten overcame economic hardship, gender discrimination, and the obscurity of a small-town upbringing to become the state’s most significant early female photographer. Her artistic vision, determination, and love of adventure spawned a career that spanned half a century. Cotton will talk about her life and work and show examples of her photographs. The Durham County Library is also hosting an exhibit of Wootten’s work in the Main Library’s third-floor fiction area, courtesy of UNC’s North Carolina Collection.
