Directories & Information

These are sources that provide basic information about periodicals (magazines, journals, newspapers, etc.), such as where a journal is published, who the editor is, or subscription information.

Note: To find articles from periodicals, use one of the subject databases instead.

  • Academic OneFile - Provides access to some 11,000 journals with full-text articles from more than 4,000 peer-reviewed journals and reference sources worldwide. Covers the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects. Includes coverage from 1980 to the present for most journals.
  • Africa-Wide NiPAD - Provides multi-disciplinary coverage about African including politics, history, economics, business, mining, development, social issues, anthropology, natural history, literature, language, law, music and much more.
  • Alternative Press Index - Alternative Press Index Archive (APIA) is a bibliographic database of journal, newspaper, and magazine articles from over 700 international alternative, radical, and left periodicals.
  • ArticleFirst
  • Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals - Offers a comprehensive listing of journal articles on architecture and design.
  • BioOne - Contains full-text articles from roughly 40 peer-reviewed journals and bulletins published by AIBS member societies and other closely related organizations.  2000-present.
  • Black Studies Center - Comprised of several cross-searchable component databases, including the International Index to Black Periodicals and historical black newspapers.
  • British Library Newspaper Library Catalogue - Over 50,000 online newspaper and periodical titles, searchable by keyword and sorted by title, date, or place.
  • British Periodicals - Provides access to the searchable full text of hundreds of periodicals from the late 17th century to the early 20th century.
  • Chronicle of Higher Education - This eJournal is now available online starting from 1995.
  • CiNii - CiNii enables the user to search both academic journals published by academic societies and research bulletins published by universities, etc., and then to follow up on references to discover documents referenced by the document found, and documents referencing the document found; it also enables access to the full text of open access documents.
  • CLASE - Bibliographic database of citations (with selected full text) of articles, essays, book reviews, statistics and other documents covering Social Sciences and Humanities published in Latin America and Caribbean countries.
  • DBpia - Provides full text databases including more than 862,000 articles of 1,124 Korean scholarly journals in 12 different fields of society, literature, economics & business, medical science, humanities, theology, law & administration, arts, engineering, natural science, and education.
  • Economist Historical Archive, 1843-2006 - Provides a complete searchable copy of every issue of The Economist from 1843 to 2006.
  • Eighteenth Century Journals - Provides integrated access to the Hope Collection at the Bodleian Library, Oxford (Eighteenth Century Journals I) and the  Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center University of Texas (Eighteenth Century Journals II).
  • Factiva - Provides updated global information and news from major newspapers and business journals.
  • IMF E-Library - The IMF e-Library collection of books, periodicals, working papers, and country reports
  • Informe - Contains the full text of popular magazines, academic journals and selected newspaper articles in Spanish.
  • Kidon Media Link - Newspapers, periodicals and other media sources from around the world.  Every country has its own integrated page.  There are no separate pages for newspapers, magazines, television, radio and news agencies.
  • KLGonline - Das kritische Lexikon zur deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur, is the standard database for German Literature and German language literature published after 1945.  The bibliography includes secondary resources, such as citations to articles in books, journals, and reviews from daily and weekly newspapers.  The library’s subscription does not include full text access to reviews; patrons have the option to register with KLG on an individual basis for purchase of full-text reviews.   • Lexis Nexis Academic wiki - Included are guides to finding specific types of information in the Lexis Nexis database, such as foreign language news, editorials and op-ed pieces, and obituaries.
  • Literature Online - A searchable collection of over a quarter million works of English and American literature; journal titles included.
  • National Index to Chinese Newspapers & Periodicals - This is an index database of about 18,000 Chinese newspapers and periodicals published 1833-1949.
  • North Carolina Periodicals Index - Produced by the Joyner Library at ECU, this free database provides indexing of articles from over 40 periodicals published in NC.  Most of these periodicals are not covered by other indexes or databases.  The Triangle's "Independent Weekly" is one example.
  • North Carolina State Publications Collection - The North Carolina State Publications Collection contains the full text of both current and historical state publications produced by the agencies of NC State Government, including serial publications (newsletters, checklists, magazines, etc.).
  • PeriodicalRadio - Online interviews conducted by Steve Black with the editors of a variety of periodicals.

  • PERSEE - Provides online runs of referenced, French-language journals in the field of the social and human sciences.
  • Project MUSE - A database of e-journals covering the arts and humanities, social science, and mathematics. The journals are published by university presses.
  • ProQuest Asian Business - Covers Asian business and financial information from key international publications including Far Eastern Economic Review, Asiaweek, and many more.
  • ProQuest Periodicals Archive Online - Periodicals Archive Online is an archive of digitised journals published in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
  • ProQuest Periodicals Index Online - Indexes thousands of selected periodicals in the humanities and social sciences from their first issues to 1995.
  • Regional Business News - A collection of business journals, newspapers and news wires covering all metropolitan and rural areas within the U.S.
  • ResearchNow - A roster of peer-reviewed, Berkeley Electronic Press journals.
  • Revues.org - Provides full-text access to French journals in social and human sciences.
  • Russian National Bibliography - allows users to digitally search the Russian Book Chamber's (Knizhnaia palata) national bibliographies for citations from books, newspapers, journals, dissertation abstracts, musical scores, and maps.
  • SRDS Media Solutions - Provides advertising media rates and advertiser data through its coverage of traditional media - such as magazines, newspapers, television, direct marketing, and radio - as well as online sources.
  • Struggles for Freedom in Southern Africa - This collection consists of more than 180,000 pages of documents and images, including periodicals, nationalist publications, records of colonial government commissions, local newspaper reports, personal papers, correspondence, UN documents, out-of-print and other particularly relevant books, oral testimonies, life histories, and speeches.
  • Waterloo Directory of English Newspapers and Periodicals, 1800-1900 - A subject-inclusive, language-inclusive bibliography of newspapers and periodicals from Victorian England . Includes 6 alphabetical indexes: Title, Issuing body, People, Town, County, and Subject. Also included are titles in any language, published during any part of their life-span in England between January 1, 1800 and December 31, 1900.
  • Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals, 1824-1900 - The Wellesley Index identifies the authors of articles within major Victorian periodicals, and provides a bibliography for each contributor. 45 important monthly and quarterly titles are included.
